Achieving Independence Day Unity

Jun 29, 2024

Happy Independence Day!

As most of us learned in school, the Library of Congress site reminds us that Independence Day, also known as the Fourth of July, is a federal holiday in the United States that celebrates the adoption of the Declaration of Independence by the Second Continental Congress on July 4, 1776.

The Declaration of Independence announced the separation of the 13 American colonies from Great Britain and their establishment as independent states. The document also summarized the colonists' motivations for seeking independence and is recognized around the world as an important message of human rights and self-governance.

The second sentence of the Declaration, written by Thomas Jefferson, states that "all men are created equal" and have rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

As we look back, we owe so much to those who stood, fought and died for our freedoms.

Today, we need to continue to work together, you and I, to maintain our freedoms. Back in 1776, and before, there was tremendous anger toward Great Britain and the Constitutional Monarchy where there was a king and a legislative body, or parliament, jointly managing the empire.

We must maintain our freedoms in the USA, and our elective government, as we work to relieve ourselves of any past hate and turn it into caring; let go of anger and turn it into helping; and convert all prejudices and turn them into including or inclusion.

Those wars are over; we have obtained our freedoms and have become friends with many of those that threatened us previously as they have learned our values.

Our biggest challenge, and opportunity, now is for us all to learn that caring is sharing, helping is assisting and including or inclusion is involving.

The cultures of the past may show that anger was overwhelming in the war as we had to be powerful against the enormous number of people that did not understand. We had to face the enemies without the armed forces that now stand strong to protect us. We also have an organized police department and sheriff’s department available to us to help us now and protect us from harm.

With the strength and power we have today to maintain our freedoms and independence, why do so many still want to exhibit anger? We have struck the word “men” from Thomas Jefferson’s famous quote and state it as “all are created equal” but where are the rights of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness?

Why do we allow our federal government to talk negatively toward each other in and out of the chambers? Who is thinking that form of communication is any pursuit of happiness any more than a king or parliament wanting to control you, your family and your property?

As we celebrate Independence Day, can we also celebrate that we all have the rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness to each other and with each other?

We joined together over 247 years ago for our freedom from another’s rule. What is it going to take today for us all to join together again and Eliminate or End Hate, Anger and Prejudice (EHAP)?

Do we know that hate, anger and prejudice are emotions we can control? Yes, each one of us can control our emotions. Of course, there are a few with medical challenges but the other 98% of us, or more, have complete control of our actions and emotions.

Can we, yes, you and I, work together to help us all understand that there is no value to emotional or physical violence? As I mentioned in a previous article, there are organized sports where hitting and kicking are allowed but they are under watch by a monitor or referee. If we are not in the ring, cage, designated field or defined location with a monitor or referee, there is absolutely no justification or value for violence in any way, manner, shape or form.

Let us help each other now. Stop violence of any form to or from anyone. Our armed services, police department and sheriff’s department need continued training also. We can help them as they help us. Unprovoked violence cannot be accepted by or to anyone. This is still an important message for human rights and self-governance.
