Unity is Accountability:
The Strength of Standing Together by Standing Up First
A close friend and I were talking about Achieving Unity this past weekend, and he said, “I agree with Unity and all that stuff, but I don’t think we should be hiring people who are not, or cannot, do the work!”
My first thought, of course, was, “WOW, where did that idea about Unity come from?”
Then, I paused and listened while he continued. I know he played sports, so he understands teamwork. He’s managed companies and even owned a successful corporation, so he knows about building teams, leading teams, and driving success through others.
Then I asked myself, because let’s be honest, sometimes you have to check in with yourself for a straight answer 😁🤣, is this what the world has come to?
With all the corporate fraud and bailouts, disability and insurance scams, nonprofit and charity mismanagement, and government contracting abuses… have we become so skeptical that we can’t think of Unity without immediately jumping to the failures of a few?
I will dive deeper into those concerns in future articles. But for now, let’s talk about Accountability and Unity.
The Pillar of Accountability is Achieving Unity
When was the last time someone you know owned a mistake, and instead of hiding it, used it as a moment to grow? Think of a time when someone’s courage to be accountable made you feel more respectful toward them, maybe even inspired you to do the same.
Accountability is not just a financial, personal or physical virtue; it is a public act of courage that helps bind us together. All of us.
In my own journey, from facing life-altering challenges to facing court decisions based on the latest fad more than fact and leading diverse teams from around the world, I have seen firsthand that accountability builds more than reputations.
Accountability builds bridges, real bridges, bridges with the strength of steel. Unity, the kind that transforms families, teams, and communities, cannot truly survive without accountability. It is not a buzzword or a background principle. It’s a foundation, solid and unshakable, an absolute.
Defining Accountability within the Context of Unity
Accountability is often misunderstood as a way to assign blame or punishment. But in the context of Unity, accountability means taking ownership of our actions, showing up for others, and committing to progress without requiring perfection. It is a daily choice to do our part, honestly, consistently, and courageously.
Through the lens of the Achieving Unity Success Formula (AUSF), which focuses on Encouragement, Inspiration, and Including others (EII), accountability becomes a strategy for building connection rather than creating conflict. It replaces frustration with forward motion, blame with ownership, and disconnection with trust.
Accountability Matters in Achieving Unity
- Accountability Builds Trust and Integrity: When people accept responsibility, others feel safe. Trust is not created by perfection, but by honesty and consistency. Accountability creates a dependable environment where individuals are valued and contributions are respected.
- Accountability Promotes Shared Contribution: Unity is not a passive alignment; it’s an active engagement. Accountability ensures that everyone carries their share of the mission. No one carries the weight alone, and no one has a right to be excused from participating, we stay Unity focused.
- Accountability Drives Sustainable Progress: Without accountability, efforts falter under the weight of excuses and deflection. When individuals own their actions, solutions become collaborative, consistent, and measurable, whether in a business, family, or commUNITY settings.
- Accountability Dismantles Entitlement and Resentment: In unbalanced environments, resentment festers when some give more than others. Accountability keeps the playing field fair, asking each person to contribute based on their role, not their rank.
- Accountability is the Action Behind the Vision: Many people believe in Unity, but belief without action leads nowhere. Accountability is the strategy that transforms ideals into impact. It turns intention into responsibility and dreams into deliverables.
The Danger of Misinterpretation
When accountability is ignored, misunderstood, or distorted into control or criticism, the damage is significant. Without it, Unity becomes uneven, some are working too much while others coast. This imbalance breeds hidden resentment, disengagement, and distrust. Worse, it sends the message that integrity does not matter to them, to the company, group or team.
The AUSF is clear: Unity without accountability is not Unity at all, it is dependency disguised as teamwork.
Action Steps: How we can Live Out Accountability Today
- Acknowledge a Mistake Openly: We all make them. Whether at home or work, when you fall short, speak up. Owning our mistake displays our maturity level and makes space for growth.
- Establish Mutual Accountability: Unite in Action. Create simple agreements with those around you, team members, family, or friends, about how you'll support and check in with one another.
- Celebrate Ownership, Not Just Outcomes: Honor Accountability. Recognize people not only for achieving results, but for the courage it takes to be responsible along the way.
- Practice Daily Reflection: What worked? What did not? What can I improve? Ask yourself: "Did I follow through today? Did I do what I said I would do?" Even small moments of reflection can lead to big changes going forward.
- Support Others Who Step Up: Encourage, Inspire, Include others (EII). When someone else takes ownership, support them. Do not minimize their effort. Encourage it. Inspire it. Include it. Applaud it. It is contagious.
Closing Encouragement
Accountability is not about perfection; it is about participation. It is the strength of showing up, owning up, and lifting up. When we hold ourselves, and others, accountable, we do more than maintain standards, we build trust, inspire courage, and move forward together. Unity starts not when we all agree, but when we all continue to contribute.
Unity is not a soft skill; it is a success strategy, a Mindset. Through the Achieving Unity Success Formula, we harness accountability not to control, but to connect. We don’t blame. We build.
