How Conversations Become Measurable Change, At Home, Work, and Beyond

Conversations are powerful. They spark ideas, challenge assumptions, and inspire dreams. But too often, conversations, no matter how thoughtful, end where they started: as words. 

The Agile Manifesto, first written for software development, taught the world a valuable lesson: meaningful conversations matter more than rigid processes. Yet, even within Agile, conversations are only as valuable as the actions they inspire.

That is where the LID-BID-WID-RID-GID Framework™ steps in. It is a simple yet powerful way to transform dialogue into action, whether you are developing software, managing a team, strengthening a relationship, or improving your community.

This framework is not limited to business or technology. It applies anywhere you want to move from talking to doing, personally or professionally.

In this first of fifteen articles exploring the Agile Manifesto through a wider lens, we begin by asking: How do we turn conversations into measurable change, improvement? The answer begins with five steps: Listen In Dialogue, Break It Down, Write It Down, Review Its Dependencies, and Get It Done.

Why Start with Conversations?

The Agile Manifesto values “individuals and interactions over processes and tools” because change starts with people, not checklists. Whether you are planning a project at work or discussing how to better support your family, conversations reveal needs, generate solutions, and build trust.

However, good conversations can also stall. You might leave a meeting or an important talk with a spouse feeling energized, only to find yourself a week later with no real progress. Why? Because ideas without full understanding, commitment and the ability to take action stay ideas.

The LID-BID-WID-RID-GID Framework™ was created to solve that problem. It respects the Agile belief in the power of dialogue but takes the next crucial step, turning that dialogue into measurable action.

The Five Steps to Turning Dialogue into Action

1. Listen In Dialogue (LID)

Everything begins with listening to understand, not just to respond. This is deeper than hearing words, it means paying attention to tone, emotions, and unspoken concerns. Whether it’s a team brainstorming session or a heartfelt talk with a teenager, genuine listening creates clarity and builds trust.

2. Break It Down (BID)

Big ideas can feel overwhelming, which is why many never leave the conversation stage. Breaking them down into smaller, understandable, achievable pieces makes them manageable. 

Instead of “we need to improve communication in our family,” break it down to “let’s schedule 15 minutes each evening for everyone to share one success and one challenge from the day.” Choose or elect a positive, committed leader to plant the small seeds of conversation into a true growth of activity. Then, rotate your leaders daily or weekly.

3. Write It Down (WID)

Thoughts become commitments when they move from conversation to paper, or to a whiteboard, a project tool, an email or text shared with everyone, or even a simple notebook. Writing things down gives you a clear reference point, keeps everyone accountable, and reduces confusion later.

4. Review Its Dependencies (RID)

Every action depends on something, time, resources, permission, or cooperation. Reviewing these dependencies early prevents delays and frustration. If your goal is to launch a new work project, do you need budget approval first? If you want to start a weekend family game night, do you need to adjust other schedules?

5. Get It Done (GID)

This is where the magic happens. Action is the bridge between intention and transformation. Even small actions, consistently taken, create big results. The conversation moves from “what if” to “what’s next.”
